What is Graphic Design?

Graphic Design

There is much talk in cyberspace about graphic design, but there are few who actually know what it is. At its most basic form, graphic design is defined as a communication process made up of various elements. These elements are:

  1. The emitter: An emitter in the communication process is an element which creates any interpretable signal. The emitter chooses the best code for a clear message.
  2. The message: A message is a signal or a combination of signals generated by a sensory stimulus in the receiver. The sensory stimulation is translated into information after the process of interpretation. The message can be informative (Example, traffic signs, warning) or persuasive (Example: billboard announcing any service or product).
  3. Receiver: The receiver is the person or group of people receiving the message.
  4. The purpose is that we want to achieve through our message. An effect must arise in the receiver. If you carry a clear message to the recipient, it will do what we want them to do.

The graphic design must comply with the communication process in an effective manner. Carrying out the idea of the customer in a clear way and to capture the attention of the audience is the challenge of every graphic artist.

Already answered the question of what is graphic design, we must begin to answer questions such as, what is a good design, what makes a good design, how to recognize a good graphic designer.

    Hi,
I am new in graphic design business, amateur but learning at my own pace with the Internet the only source of knowledge.
I found your website highly impressive. But I have one question: Is it possible for everyone to become a good graphic designer? I mean, does it take some extraordinary ability to excel, or is it just all about training and exposure?
Will you kindly, as very senior in the field, suggest me where to start and how to learn this art on my own?
    Regards,
    Md. Rashid

    Hi Rashid

Like Juan Rivera from Graphict-iti.com said, everyone can become a graphic designer. Here is my advice:

Patience = you will need a lot. The road of learning by yourself is a hard one, but if you know your goals, you know that there is something good waiting at the end of the yellow brick road.

Creativity = there are tons of sources of inspiration beyond magazines, books or museums. It’s good to visit a museum or buy some books, but sometimes we can’t, so take your camera and go for a walk. Real life is the best source of inspiration. Besides, this will help you train your eye making it more sensitive to your surroundings and you will see an improvement in your designs.

Desire = If you lose hope, no matter how much you try you will never achieve anything.

Talent? = Ok, some people born with it some are not… like me, and my advice is practice. Some of us don’t have the ability to draw, paint, etc but practice is what makes the difference. Talent = Practice + Practice + Dedication

Well Rashid, I hope this will help you, the best of luck and keep moving forward.
