Bringing Graphic Design In-House: How and When to Design It Yourself

Books

I bought this book a while back. Although I have been designing for a few years now, this book caught my eye. When I opened it to see what was inside I ran to the counter and purchased it. The book is filled with great information on how to create a small to medium business.

The book is very clear as to who their targeted market is: “Bringing Graphic Design In-House is geared toward untrained and marginally trained “designers” working within a company that has decided to do their design in-house rather than hire an outside firm, and small business owners that have to design their own collateral (Amazon Product Description)”. That means that if you are a seasoned designer, as far as design basics go, you got that in the bag. However, for those of us looking on how to start and manage a studio the book is, to my concern, a goldmine.

Once you begin to read the book, you see the potential and coverage of the content. Not only does it cover the basics of design but also the basics of a business. I, like many designers, have a background in art. This means I have no idea how to start or run a business. File management, account management, storage management and even the best way to create backups is covered in detail. Additionally, the book offers a few lists of supplies, from hardware, software and general supplies to help you stock your studio.

Bringing Graphic Design In-House is filled with many examples that inspire. There are also case studies included. The book is a good buy. I recommend going to your local book store and look through the pages. Maybe you’ll have the same reaction as I did and buy it right away.
